Why you should compare DSL service providers

DSL service providers of all sizes have different strengths and weaknesses. Odds are that, someday, you will have to deal with your DSL-ISP’s customer support department and if it’s a big company, like AOL, that could be a minus. This is one area where smaller local firms have an edge. Not only do they offer internet access, many of these small ISPs sell computers, install networks, and act as mini-IT departments for local businesses. That kind of service makes them an attractive choice for home users who might need hardware support or have issues with their internet connection. Sometimes it’s better to get service from a small ISP rather than one of the “Big Three” DSL service providers.

Which one should you choose? You can get some help from your friends, by asking them which neighborhood DSL service providers they use. Or you could try calling a company’s customer support number and test their service. If a live human answers, how well does he speak English and understand your technical questions? Does he leave you on hold forever, or transfer you repeatedly? Many DSL service providers farm out their telephone customer support centers overseas and the help is less than knowledgeable.

You also want your ISP to stay in business. A strong national company, such as Verizon, is less likely to go belly-up and take your connection with it, but there are no guarantees a company won’t be defunct in another year. If the technical support team at your ISP becomes suddenly hard to reach, it could be a warning sign your provider is having financial trouble. DSL service providers often work with each other (especially cable and phone companies) to provide services and tech support so if you live in a city or suburb, chances are your company will be just fine.

Most ISPs don’t offer free trial subscriptions for high speed internet access like the dial up services do. So if you try out a service and decide that it’s not for you, you may be stuck with installation costs (if there are any) as well as minimum monthly charges. DSL service providers such as EarthLink DSL, for example, has a minimum DSL contract for 90 days, but most dial ups offer a free trial period and don’t require you to sign a contract.
