Broadband Internet Providers Want Your Business

As you have probably noticed, the Broadband Internet Providers have been flooding your (snail) mail boxes with flyers and postcards hoping to get your attention. For those of you who have been suffering from the narrowband blues, and have been tearing out your hair if you have to wait more than 5 seconds for a page to download, you’ve probably actually started to read some of those enticing perks, such as free kits and free introductory months, offered by cable and DSL broadband internet providers.

If you’ve outgrown your dial up modem, you’ll be pleased to know that signing up with one of the broadband internet providers is fast and easy. You can register an account online and they will automatically check your location to see if cable and/or DSL high speed Internet access is available in your neighborhood.

In most places you’ll have a choice between cable and DSL (though remote locations require satellite access), and if both are available then price and service will be your deciding factor. Many cable access providers claim their internet connections to be as fast or faster than access from DSL service providers, but the connection is shared with other users and does slow down during peak times. DSL is “always on” and broadband internet providers have few complaints about down times from their customers.

One other consideration is the broadband equipment. Local cable companies who now provide internet access will often charge a small rental fee on the required modem or they will give you the opportunity to purchase it outright. Larger ISP companies such as AOL, Verizon and Earthlink DSL, may include the modem at no cost. As for the hook up, broadband internet providers do all the work offsite and away from your home, so you’ll never have to deal with the “cable guy” knocking on your door.
