The Choice Between Cable vs DSL

Cable vs DSL? It’s a question that has a lot of potential customers scratching their heads. They’ve heard the urban legend that cable is faster, but then there’s the problem of the shared bandwidth with other subscribers in the neighborhood. That’s right. Neighbors can interfere with your web browsing by doing their own thing. Like the guy down the street running an illegal server on the line, or the kid next door downloading his entire collection of Freddie Kruger movies and slowing your connection to a crawl. Cable vs DSL indeed!

Surfing the net using your broadband ISP service is more enjoyable when the bandwidth is dedicated (meaning it’s all yours). Both cable and DSL service providers offer speeds up to 50 times faster than with standard dial-up modems. Pages that took forever to download now jump on your screen in seconds. You can get live news and weather, play games, shop, bid on auctions—even trade stocks—with blazing speed. So which is better in the cable vs DSL argument? Is one truly superior?

Cable vs DSL is largely an issue concentrated in high-population metro areas and big cities. Basically if you can get one type, you can probably get the other. Depending on where you live, you can order Internet service from Verizon, EarthLink, AOL or MSN, as well as a handful of other ISPs. In most cases, the cable companies have partnered with an ISP subsidiary that delivers the actual high speed internet access connection and handles tech support. So your cable company can give you DSL, and the phone company can get you cable.

So if saving money and faster speeds are your requirements, and if both options are available in your area, check with your local cable and DSL companies and compare prices and features. Cable vs DSL? It’s a great problem to have.
