Let’s face it. You want cheap DSL and you want web pages to download faster than you can blink. But can you find both loves in a single broadband ISP? The answer is probably no. The companies that provide high-speed Internet access have teamed with other local companies to not only expand their market but also to share the costs of providing services. Unfortunately, these techno marriages haven’t resulted in cheap DSL. The top broadband options are DSL, cable, fixed wireless, and satellite, and there are plenty of pros and cons for each. The first factor is which of them are available in your area and whether or not you can get the service at your home. Your next consideration is probably price. Smaller ISP companies advertise “low cost high speed internet” but that doesn’t mean cheap DSL. Buyer beware: many of those high speed internet access plans are still dial up access, not DSL. And then, of course, you hope to choose a reliable but cheap DSL service provider who might actually still be in business six months from now. But with broadband providers going bust faster than the Internet bubble did in 2000, and with a continuing economic downturn, some companies have filed for bankruptcy at the same time the number of DSL subscribers has jumped nearly 400 percent! The larger DSL sellers and resellers, including EarthLink and Verizon, were all forced to raise their basic broadband rates over the same time period, despite their growing number of subscriptions. Overall, DSL runs about $10-$20 per month more than cable, but it is by far less expensive than satellite service. Come to think of it, maybe it’s the satellite subscribers who are talking of moving to cheap DSL . . .
