Be Careful of Cheap Internet Access

Service providers are popping up everywhere offering cheap internet access. If you’re a casual user who doesn’t spend a lot of time on the internet, a low cost plan maybe just for you. You can get an email account, unlimited access, spam and pop up blockers, and even instant messaging. What you won’t get with cheap internet access, however, is speed.

If you crave speed you’ll want to upgrade to a broadband option such as DSL. Most broadband ISPs offer their residential customers set rates for DSL and cable, and they offer their business customers plans with universal multiple speed/pricing schemes. Major providers such as MSN and EarthLink DSL adjust fees for small businesses depending on needs for downstream and upstream traffic. Verizon DSL, for example, charges about $50US per month for a rate of 768/128 Kbps, but the fee triples if the business needs a larger uplink rate, say a 768/768 Kbps service. Businesses are having a hard time finding cheap internet access if they have a need for speed.

You know it yourself: cheap is cheap, and quality is quality. Most web users are intelligent and know that internet companies usually can’t offer both a quality high speed product and a cheap price. In reality, it just doesn’t exist. The economics of internet providers are the same in every country and many companies risk going out of business by undercutting the price of their competitor. The result is that often cheap internet access translates to an ISP giving low quality service.

Be careful of the fine print when looking for cheap internet access. If you’re looking for high usage and fast speed, then choose cable or DSL high speed internet access, but be ready to pay up for performance. Like they always say: you get what you pay for.
