TV imaging has come a long ways from its roots as a spinning disc with holes in it. The latest development in TV technology is found with digital satellite Dish Network systems. This new technology provides the most data in the sharpest resolution with the clearest audio ever. Digital satellite Dish Network TV is just the latest step in an amazing story of technology development. It is hard to believe but digital satellite Dish Network TVs can trace their roots to a mechanical imaging system invented in 1884, by German student Paul Nipkow. This electromechanical TV system used a flat metal disc with holes spiraling into its center to scan or raster the image. The image was then sent by electrical impulse to the receiver. The process was very crude. It was virtually impractical for nearly another 50 years. By the 1930s, both electronic and radio technology had caught up with Nipkow’s spinning disc. An electronic TV that transmitted signals to receivers by using radio waves replaced the electromechanical image transmission devise. There was still a long march ahead for the fledgling industry to reach the digital satellite Dish Network TV systems we enjoy today. But, the journey had begun. Digital imaging is simply the latest step in the journey begun by Nipkow. Digital satellite Dish Network TV gives viewers much sharper imagery. These images are about six and a half times sharper or clearer than NTSC format TVs. More data can be transmitted over a digital signal than is possible with an analog signal and digital audio is also much clearer. Nipkow’s invention was an important development, but it was little more than a dream about the future. We enjoy that future today.
