Picking Among DSL Internet Service Providers

You’ve been reading about DSL internet service providers and have narrowed down the choice between a big national provider and a smaller regional one. If cost is the only concern, you can still find literally hundreds of ISPs who offer plans for $10 a month or less for dial up. DSL and cable fees still tend to range from $40 to $55 a month for unlimited access. Most companies offer some perks and some even include the modem hardware so you’ll need to dig a little deeper when choosing among DSL internet service providers.

Before you run into the arms of any old ISP ask yourself what you want your internet experience to be. If reliable high speed internet access is important and you plan to visit a lot of sites that are heavy with streaming media or java, like viewing stock charts or watching video clips, you’ll likely want to chose a broadband ISP. If you only use the net for e-mail, then maybe an inexpensive dial up account will suit you, versus the whole shebang you’d get from the DSL internet service providers.

DSL internet service providers provide speed. Speed is important but reliability is critical. If you can’t download your e-mail or access the websites you frequently visit, then it doesn’t matter how fast your connection is. And unfortunately, there are quite a few ISPs that aren’t that reliable. According to a survey done by the National Regulatory Research Institute, 47 percent of 14,000 users reported problems with their ISPs. Almost half! The biggest problems were service outages and interruptions.

One surprise in the survey was that smaller more regional ISPs, such as Verizon DSL, had better service results: those same customers reported about 10 percent fewer problems than did the customers of the Big Three (AOL, EarthLink and MSN). No company is perfect all the time but the DSL internet service providers are working hard to attract new customers and keep them satisfied with reasonable access fees and “always on” service.
