If the language of the internet has you scratching your head, let’s start with DSL ISP. The acronym stands for “Digital Subscriber Line, Internet Service Provider.” Basically, that’s a company that connects its residential and business customers to the internet using broadband technology over the telephone lines. Broadband allows for super fast download times for streaming media such as live video, music, and games, or just opening static web pages at lightning fast speeds. A DSL ISP can be a large company, such as MSN or AOL, or a smaller regional company handling part or all of your service.

A DSL ISP can offer high speed internet access to home users who have been frustrated with their cable Internet which uses a shared connection that suffers from “traffic jams” or slowdowns during peak evening hours. Some providers make you pay for installation (some are free, and others can be $100 or more) and some have “self-installation” requiring you to only unpack the modem from the box, plug it in, and run the software. A broadband provider can charge typically two to four times the cost of dial-up, from $40 to $55 a month. A DSL ISP will also sell broadband plans for businesses but the cost generally run hundreds of dollars per month.

Depending on the companies operating in your area, and the physical location of the central office near your home, you can usually choose between the types of service (cable, satellite or DSL service providers) you want. A DSL ISP company, such as Verizon and Earthlink DSL, offers high speed internet, dial up, web hosting, long distance calling and wireless service and an array of other great services, so that you can access and enjoy the internet on your own terms.
