A high-power Ku Band dish for the reception of Direct-to-Home satellite TV is used by service providers DIRECTV and the DISH Network. Measuring only 18" in diameter, the unobtrusive Ku band dish can be installed anywhere - even on a balcony or patio - as long as the dish faces straight south. This makes satellite TV an attractive solution even for people living in condos or apartments. A Ku band dish uses a frequency range between 12.2-12.7 GHz, the spectrum assigned by the FCC for satellite TV. The first satellite systems operated in the C-Band between 3.7-4.2 GHz, requiring huge dishes measuring 7 feet in diameter. The C-Band market became very popular as early as 1981 when the sale of dishes exploded. Free programming was available to anyone wanting to go through the expense and trouble of setting up such a system and it is still in use by approx. 850,000 viewers worldwide. The introduction of Ku Band dish systems finally led to an explosion of subscribers for satellite TV services offered by the Dish Network and DirecTV. More than 20 million viewers in the United States now subscribe to either one of these services. Both providers offer more than 200 channels of digital quality programming. Subscribers are given free satellite TV systems for up to 4 rooms when they buy a one year subscription. A Ku Band dish system is useless unless you subscribe to either DirecTV or Dish Network programming because the signals are encrypted and impossible to decode. With the advent of FREE equipment provided by the networks which includes delivery and installation of a free dish and receivers for up to four rooms, satellite television service has become the preferred choice in choosing a home entertainment system.
