Challenge. For some it is the challenge. For others it is the excitement of the challenge tinged with a hint of risk. For others it is a matter of principle. No matter the reason, a growing number of people make it a hobby to program Direct TV cards so they can get free satellite TV. Of course, DirecTV isn’t crazy about this hobby and is continually working on increasingly sophisticated methods of thwarting this activity. Still, the hackers keep finding new ways to program Direct TV cards. Successful testers instantly share the most updated information with people around the world through the speed and power of the Internet. DirecTV issues access cards to subscribers. These access cards contain a portion of a key code. This is combined with the portion programmed into the receiver to form the complete key. With this key, the access card gives the receiver instructions on which channels it can unscramble. A normal subscription may include 1-200 channels from a selection of 500 – 1,000. For some people, this isn’t enough. They want to program Direct TV cards for even more channels. Or, they want to program cards so that they get all of the channels for free. For most of these people, the reason they program Direct TV cards is not about the money they save by getting the free TV. It is because they can. They enjoy the challenge of figuring out ways to ‘play the game and beat the system’. It appeals to a rebel instinct. The fact that it is probably illegal and that DirecTV is prosecuting violators in court only adds to the game. The fact that it is illegal adds a degree of danger to give it a little extra thrill. Others claim they are doing it as a matter of principle. They contend that since airwaves are public domain, that the satellite companies do not have the right to charge for broadcast TV signals, even if they are digital broadband technology. Regardless the reasons, people who program Direct TV cards are a growing problem for DirecTV and other satellite TV providers. These companies are spending millions of dollars to stop hackers. And, who pays this cost? The rest of us, of course. We too, are caught up in the game as the satellite TV providers divvy up the costs of countering the hackers among those of us who pay our subscriptions. Related Articles Never Miss a Show
