If you’re still debating the costs of XM Radio and whether it’s worth it, think about this: if there is just one channel you love, with programming you cannot find anywhere else, then that in itself can make the reasonable expense of $10 to $12 per month worthwhile. Start-up costs for satellite radio can be pricy depending on your tastes in system, especially if you plan to install an after-market system in your current vehicle, but a “do-it-yourself” car installation for many XM Radio units is not difficult and can save you money going this route. It’s fairly simple, since all you’ll need is an XM car or portable satellite radio receiver, the appropriate installation kit, and of course, a subscription. If you wish to upgrade your present car radio, you will need an FM Modulator or XM radio receiver, and depending on what hardware and brand you already have, you can expect prices to range from $80 to $299. Xm Radio also offers a hardware/software radio combination called XM PCR (about $70) that hooks up to your PC so you can listen through your computer’s sound system. Again, you can hook it up yourself using very easy installation instructions. Once you’re set up in your car you’ll find you will never travel out of range of any program you’re listening to, and you won’t get static when searching for channels, or hear a program fade in and out. Nor will you ever have to listen to radio commercials again, or wait for the DJ to tell you the name of the song you just heard. You’ll never miss a title again, since the digital format lets stations transmit the name of the artist and track, and displays it right on the control panel of your self-installed XM Radio receiver.
